How to Prepare for Surgery
We will have you come in for a pre-surgical appointment 1-2 weeks prior to your surgery date to go over post op instructions and give you a list of medications that will be called into your pharmacy. All prescriptions that are called in are to be taken after surgery, except for the anti-viral, which is to be started 2 days prior to the procedure. If you have someone that will be taking care of you, it is recommended that they come to this pre-surgical appointment to hear and understand post op instructions. We will provide one dose of arnica to help prevent bruising, which you can start taking 8 days prior to your procedure. If you would like to take another dose after surgery, arnica supplements can be purchased at our office or in common drugstores. We recommend obtaining all necessary items before surgery, that way after surgery you can go straight home and rest.
What Can I Expect After Surgery?
For the first 5-7 days after surgery, it is common to have bruising of the jawline and neck area, which should begin to subside shortly thereafter. Directly after your procedure, we will provide a head wrap that holds ice packs to maintain contour of the neck and help reduce swelling. Drainage from the surgical sites in front of the ears and below the neck are common for the first 2-3 days after surgery. We recommend sleeping at a 30–45-degree angle for the first 3-5 days to help minimize swelling. It is normal for the neck to feel stiff for up to 2-3 weeks following surgery, however you can start stretching your neck out 5-7 days after the procedure to help relieve some of the tightness.
There will be pinpoint needling on the face occupied by bruising from the Profound treatment.
Prescriptions Post-Surgery
- You will be prescribed medications based on your health history.
- You will receive pain medication to use for the first 3-5 days after surgery, if needed.
- An antibiotic will be prescribed for you to start taking the day after surgery.
- An oral steroid will be prescribed to help reduce swelling.
- Anti-nausea will help aid with any nausea you may receive from surgery
- You will receive an antiviral medication to help prevent cold sore outbreak from the profound treatment. This medication is to be started 2 days prior to your procedure.
Wound Care for the Surgical Site
- The elastic support wrap that is placed on the day of the procedure should not be removed for long periods of time for the first 3 days after surgery. You should remove the bandage twice each day, wash your neck gently with a gentle cleanser, and re-apply the bandage snugly, but not so tight that it is irritating.
- After your one-week follow up, you will be cleared to only wear the support wrap at night. It is very important to remember to wear the support bandage as many nights as possible over the next 3 weeks.
- The sutures that are placed are dissolvable, so avoid getting them wet for the first week. Keep a thin layer of Aquaphor on the sites to help minimize scarring. The incisions should never appear dry, as this can create unpleasant scarring.
- We will provide a skincare kit to help aid your healing for the first 3 weeks after surgery.
- We recommend getting on board with our team of estheticians 2 weeks after surgery for optimal results.
Skin Care After Surgery
- We will provide you with a post-op care kit for you to use 2-3 weeks after the procedure. We will also help you schedule with one of our estheticians to maximize your results.
Activity Level after Surgery
- Avoid any strenuous physical activity for 1 week.
- You may return to school or light duty work (non-physical labor) within a few days of the surgery, or as tolerated.
- Although you just had surgery, we recommend you do not stay in bed while awake but try to be slightly active and walk around the house.
- The swelling and bruising will worsen over the first 3-4 days after surgery, which is expected, but will begin to subside shortly thereafter.
What follow-up care will I receive?
- You will have a follow up 1 week after the procedure.
- We may recommend a lymphatic massage 2-3 weeks after your procedure to help reduce swelling.
What happens at the 1 week follow up?
- We will remove any sutures that are ready to come out.
- We have a Candela Vbeam Prima Perfecta Laser Machine, a pulsed-dye laser (PDL), that will help reduce the appearance of any remaining dark red or purple bruising more quickly.
- We take photos at each follow-up appointment to monitor your healing progress.
What Happens at Additional Follow-Up Appointments?
- At each appointment, we spend time making sure you are comfortable with your results and review the post-op care that is needed for each progressing week.
